How Humidifiers Work
Moisturizers, lotions, and even lip balms will keep your skin smooth in dry weather because they prevent water from migrating and evaporating from your skin. This video from the American Chemical Society shows exactly how they work.
There are three main types of moisturizing ingredients:
- Occlusive agents such as Vaseline adhere to the skin and prevent water from flowing out.
- The emollients in lotions, which are formulated with oils and fatty acids, fill in tiny cracks that can form between skin cells.
- Moisturizers, another common ingredient in lotions, attract moisture. They reduce flaking and encourage your body to produce more of its own waxy substances that prevent further water loss.
All moisturizers do at least one of these functions, and many do all three. Watch the video to learn more about how these harmless chemicals help your skin.
