Change the 90/10 Ratio to Improve Your Inefficient Workflow

The 90/10 ratio described by product designer Brian Lee suggests that you probably spend 90% of your day on ineffective tasks that you shouldn’t be doing. Focus on changing that ratio to do more.

Le works with real estate agents who have to deal with a large volume of mundane, ineffective tasks on a daily basis. Its job is to speed up these tasks so that agents can do meaningful work instead of digging through tedious spreadsheets. Its goal is to change the 90/10 ratio. Instead of agents spending 90% of their time on grumpy work and 10% of their time on something meaningful, he wants to quickly complete cumbersome tasks so that 90% of agents’ time can be spent on something worthwhile:

My goal is to change the 90/10 ratio for a real estate agent where they now spend 90% of their time on productive activities instead of the current 10%. If I can do that, I will get a 900% increase in how much money they can make. I say this all the time here, paying the price for the 90/10! The more we can change this scale, the more money our agents make and the more money our company makes. I need to make sure the tools we produce make life easier for our agents so they can make more money.

The rest of us can apply the same principle. How much time do you spend carefully copying data from one spreadsheet to another, or copying long lines of data? If you can improve this process, you can increase your productivity much more than if you just work faster using the same ineffective methods.
