You Can Now Claim $ 9 or $ 55 in the PS3 Other Operating System Settlement

Have you installed Linux on your PS3? If you can prove it, Sony owes you $ 55. If not, but you still have a PS3, you will be given $ 9. This is all part of the settlement of the PS3 “Other Operating Systems” removal case.

Back in 2010, Sony removed the ability to install Linux from the PlayStation 3 . Because this was a promised feature of the system, people sued, and in the end, five years later, you could reap the benefits. You can now apply. If you provide proof of purchase for your PS3 (original fat version) or proof of PSN login with a serial number, you can get $ 9. If you want the full $ 55, you will need to provide proof that you have used Linux. What evidence? You will need one of these:

  • (a) proof of purchase prior to April 1, 2010 for a version of Linux that is compatible with and installed on your Fat PS3;
  • (b) proof that you downloaded a version of Linux that was compatible with Fat PS3 and was installed on it before April 1, 2010;
  • (c) screenshot (or image) showing Linux running on Fat PS3;
  • (d) a screenshot (or image) showing that a portion of the Fat PS3 hard drive is still formatted for Another OS with Linux installed;
  • (e) proof that you contacted SCEA or a third party prior to December 31, 2010 to discuss your use of the Other OS or your concerns about Patch 3.21, such as a copy of your email or message that you posted on a message board which discusses your use of Other OS or Linux features on Fat PS3; or
  • (f) any other documentary evidence that you may have confirming that you have used the functionality of the Other OS prior to April 1, 2010, which the Administrator of the settlement agreement deems valid.

You will find everything you need to apply on the dedicated settlement page below.
