The Right Ettiquete for Enjoying a Fondue Meal
Fondue, a delicious dish where you can cover everything with sticky cheese , is perfect for dates and celebrations. But believe it or not, this is a little more than just dipping things in liquid goodness.
In this video from the ZAGAT YouTube channel, Hugo Suchet, Chef at Artisanal , shares some important tips for making fondue. Here’s what you should know before heading to a good fondue restaurant:
- They’ll bring you all sorts of foods to dip into a large saucepan of melted cheese, but you can start with bread. This is not only a tradition, but also a great base for your stomach, especially if you are planning on drinking wine.
- Never remove cheese from the pan, dip food with your hands, and never dip food twice.
- Do not eat with a fondue fork. This is bad manners, but it is also dangerous as the fondue forks are very sharp. Attach the food, dip it in the cheese, and then place it on a plate with a fork.
- After dipping something into the cheese, rotate with a fork over the saucepan until the cheese stops dripping. This is the best way not to make a mess.
- Make the fondue crisp and creamy by dipping into eights. This will prevent the fancy cheese crust from forming on the surface of the fondue.
While it might seem like there are many rules, fondue is a fun and playful meal. Perhaps the most interesting rule is “bail”. If someone loses a piece of food in a pot, the table makes him do one thing. It can be as simple as asking them to buy a drink or a cheeky way to steal a kiss from your date. Of course, if you make your own fondue at home, you can eat it however you like.
