Dropbox Doesn’t Work Well With MacOS Sierra, Here’s How to Fix It
If you’ve just upgraded to macOS Sierra and your Dropbox app isn’t working, you’re not alone. Even with the latest version of the app, some users are experiencing strange behavior – error messages, confusing sync icons, etc. Here’s what you can do to reduce the annoyance.
If you experience any issues after updating, such as Apple error messages or dialog boxes when moving files to Dropbox, confusing sync icons in or within the Dropbox folder, or iCloud sync issues, it is most likely that iCloud works badly with your Dropbox folder. According to the Dropbox team , most of these issues occur when you have iCloud sync enabled, you have a desktop or documents folder synced to iCloud (this is automatically enabled during macOS Sierra installation), and your Dropbox folder is either on your desktop. either in the docs. folder. If you see these icons and error messages, here’s what you can do:
- Install the latest version of Dropbox .
- Move Dropbox back to its default location (not your desktop or documents folder).
- Turn off iCloud notifications on your computer by opening Finder, clicking Applications, choosing iCloud, clicking Settings and going to the Advanced menu.
There is no reason why you can’t use Dropbox and iCloud to sync files, but as Dropbox explains, using both can lead to more of these issues. Dropbox does not currently support a configuration where iCloud and Dropbox can sync the same files. You can read more about compatibility issues between Dropbox and iCloud at the link below.
Update: An Apple representative contacted us to clarify that potential compatibility issues are related to iCloud Drive (not iCloud sync) and explained that you can add your desktop and documents folder to iCloud Drive. Everything is controlled by the user, and this feature is disabled by default. When upgrading to macOS Sierra, you are asked if you want to add the Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud Drive. If you enable it and later want to disable this feature, you can remove the Desktop and Documents folders from System Preferences, iCloud, iCloud Drive / Options. You can also exclude any other third party app from the same location.
