Plantation Silver Rum 3 Stars Will Break Your Bacardi Habit
Rum can get a bad reputation, usually because everyone has had the “I drank too much Bacardi and Coke” experience. However, it can be much more and we only have a bottle to get you back into the rum game.
I recently discussed this with my favorite bartender at my favorite bar , who knew right away which bottle to recommend to get rid of romophobia. Plantation Silver 3 Star Rum is a blend of rums from the “3 Stars of the Caribbean” (Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad). Unlike most white rums (which are usually fermented in steel), 3 Star is a blend of unripe and wood-aged rums that have been filtered to remove “woody tannins” while preserving the aging aroma of the wood. Brown sugar, honey, and cocoa beans open up a flavor profile that later gives way to vanilla, cloves, and all other goodies, including root beer. In short: it’s delicious and a great starting point for creating a cocktail. (It can also usually be found for under twenty dollars.)
Now comes the fun part. Because this rum is so flavorful, you don’t have to do much with it to make a delicious cocktail. Ti ‘Punch is arguably one of the most refreshing rum cocktails out there, and even easier to make than daiquiri.
Ti ‘Punch (Recipe from Daniel Casto in Double Dragon):
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Plantation Silver rum 3 stars
- Lime half juice
- 1/4 ounce demerara (as plain syrup, but made with turbinado or raw sugar, not white table sugar; Double Dragon makes them using a 2: 1 sugar to water ratio)
Pour everything into a glass with ice and stir. A sip. Relax. Feel 80% more tropical.
