Pokémon Go Update Blocks Root Users, Here’s How to Play It Anyway
Android: Pokémon Go released an update over the weekend that lets you make one Pokémon your friend . Careful! It also discreetly blocks the game from anyone with root access. Not so neat. Here’s how to get around this limitation and still play.
It looks like Niantic decided to block root users to prevent GPS spoofing and using things like Xposed mods to cheat in the game. While this may be a noble goal, many legitimate users will be caught in the crossfire (and it still won’t stop cheaters). Namely, Android Police has already found a way to get around this limitation.
The bypass path is used Android-fashion Magisk, to hide the fact that you got the root-access of the Pokémon games. According to Android Police, you’ll need a device with an unlocked bootloader. You will also need to either perform a standard system restore and boot, or uninstall any form of root access and Xposed you have installed. Otherwise, this process may not work. You will also need a dedicated bootloader.
You can find a complete, long set of instructions on the website below. Keep in mind that you need to know what you are doing before flashing anything to your device or fiddling with custom bootloaders. Unfortunately, this process is only required to play the popular game, but if you follow the instructions carefully, you should be fine. Be sure to check out our guide if you need a refresher on how to root your phone .
