How to Upgrade to IOS 10 Right Now
iOS 10 is due out next Tuesday , but if you have the patience of a teenager, don’t worry, you can upgrade to iOS 10 right now.
EDIT: iOS 10 is officially out, download it from your updates or iTunes.
If you are in beta, please upgrade now
iOS 10 has been available in beta for a while, and Apple sent out the final version of iOS 10 to beta testers this morning. If you’re in the beta program, go to Settings> General> Software Update and you’ll update to the latest version of iOS 10. This is the easiest way to update your phone if you’re already registered. in a programme. Otherwise, head over to Apple’s registration page and see if you can register.
If you don’t want to mess around with the beta program because it hurts a bit to quit, you can still download the final version of iOS 10 right now. You just need to jump over a couple of hoops.
Step one: back up your device
Make sure you back up your device using iTunes or iCloud (or both if you’re worried) before updating. Unlike previous early updates, you won’t have to restore your phone this time around, but it’s still a good idea to have up-to-date backups in case something goes wrong.
As always, things can change before the final public release, so if you are uncomfortable with screwing up something, just wait until Tuesday.
Step two: download Xcode 8
Thanks to recent changes to the way developer accounts work, it is now possible to download and install Golden Masters (which should be exactly the same as the final, public release) directly from Apple. This is great news! The catch is that you have to be on a Mac and have Xcode 8 installed first.
If you don’t install Xcode 8 first, you will get an error and your phone will be cleaned up, so don’t skip this step.
- Go to the Xcode 8 page and click the download link . Xcode is only available on Mac.
- Sign in to your Apple account. You may need to sign up for the free developer program (not the paid one) after signing in if you haven’t already.
- Click the Download Xcode 8 link and wait for Xcode to download.
- Double click the XIP file to install Xcode 8, it may take a while.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation, which will update your version of iTunes.
Once this is all settled, it’s time to update your iOS device.
Step three: download iOS 10
Apple has released iOS 10.0.1 to developers, which is currently listed as the “gold major” version of iOS 10. Find your device below and click the link to download the iOS 10 IPSW file for your device. If any of the links below don’t work for any reason, you can find the list on the iPhone Wiki .

Step four: install iOS 10 using iTunes
After downloading the appropriate iOS 10 IPSW file and installing Xcode 8, you can install it on your iOS device.
- Connect your iOS device to your Mac.
- Open iTunes and select your device.
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click the Refresh button on the Summary page. If you’d rather start from scratch and restore your iOS device, hold down the Option key and click Restore.
- Select the IPSW file you downloaded above and click Open.
That’s it, from there iTunes will update your device to iOS 10, and as long as no bugs are found before the last release on Tuesday, you should be fine.
