Rate Your Desires From One to Ten Before Negotiating With Your Boss

Making good deals is an art. But before you get started, you need to know your priorities and what actually makes the deal profitable. Therefore, before you start, rate each negotiated item on a 10-point scale so you know what is important to you.

Something that is very important to you, such as a non-negotiable vacation during the holidays, will have 10 points. Things that you don’t care about, like remote work, will be one of them. If any of these matters more or less, rate them in the middle.

Better to do this for reference. It makes no sense to show your cards unnecessarily, so don’t come and tell your potential boss, “Vacation is 10 on my list.” However, John Rampton of Inc. says that he even increases the rating sometimes a little.

Wondering how badly you or your partner want something? Write a number on it. For example, the number 1 is neutral, and the number 10 is something you cannot live without. Hopefully this will lead both sides to eventually come up with or propose an alternative. This has allowed me in the past to be very direct with the other side, letting them know that I don’t want to leave on the table.
