How to Play Google’s Secret Neko Atsume-Style Easter Egg in Android Nougat

If you love collecting virtual cats and have Android Nougat, you’re in luck: Google has added a cat collecting Easter egg called Android Neko to the latest Android, and while it’s not as fun as Neko Atsume , you still get to collect cats. laying out treats.

First, let’s define your expectations. Android Neko is not so much a “game” as a feature of the operating system. You lay out the food, wait for the cat to appear, and it is added to your collection. This is passive entertainment, but there is no “play” screen, no play area to watch, no treats or toys to buy. It won’t replace your favorite cat collecting game, but it’s nice that Google has built it into the OS.

We found it thanks to the great guys at How-To Geek , and it’s easy to get started with if you have Nougat. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings on your phone (by dragging the notification bar down and tapping the gear, or by opening the Settings app in the app drawer.)
  2. Scroll down to Android Version, which should say 7.0, and tap three or four times until it disappears and is replaced by a large N on the screen.
  3. Tap N four or five times, then press and hold until the phone vibrates. You will see a tiny cat smiley appear under the letter N and then disappear.
  4. Pull down the notification shade again, then pull down the menu again until you see “edit” at the bottom right of the shadow. Tap it.
  5. In the “Drag to Edit Tiles” section, you should see a cat that says “Android Easter Egg”. Press and hold the cat, drag it to quick settings and drop it wherever you want.
  6. Press back to exit this screen, then pull down the notification bar to see where you dropped the cat. It should now be a dish labeled “Empty Dsih”.
  7. Click on the empty plate to select the cat food. You have four options: chunks, fish, chicken, or a treat. Choose whatever you like!

Now close the notification panel and wait. When the cat appears, you will receive a notification and the message “Cat has arrived” (shown at the top of the article) will appear on the main screen along with its number. Tap the notification to find out which cat it is and its number. (How-To Geek says that if you have an Android Wear device, it will vibrate to notify you!)

When you open the notification, you will be taken to the Cats menu, where you will see all the cats you have collected since you turned on the Easter egg and started spreading food. Tap any of them to give them their own names. I renamed the one above “Sandy”. You can always return to the Cats menu to browse your collection by pressing and holding a dish, even if it contains food.

You can share your cats (or delete them, although you never want to) by holding down any of them and clicking the appropriate icon.

As we said, not quite a full-fledged “game”, but definitely a little fun, built into the latest version of Android, which most of us would otherwise miss out on.
