Find Out How Facebook Thinks You Are Policy Based With This Setting

If you use Facebook regularly, the site probably has a lot of information about you. It uses this information to determine which ads to show you. Now you can see what Facebook thinks of you, including which political spectrum you are on.

To get started, go to facebook.com/ads/preferences . Here you will find a large collection of “interests” that Facebook thinks you have, sorted by category. Click on Lifestyle and Culture to find, among other things, your political position. If you clearly dislike a particular politician’s Facebook page, Facebook will guess and post that assumption here.

The entire ad preferences page is a fascinating look at how Facebook analyzes and categorizes its users. If you don’t want a particular theme to affect the ads you see, you can remove them here. Obviously, you can’t turn it off completely, but you can customize it.

It’s unclear if this information affects what you see in your news feed. Presumably, even if Facebook kept a different database for ad preferences and story interests, they would line up exactly the same. Knowing that your tapes are only showing you part of the story is important in combating your own biases .
