Why Should We All Spend More Time Looking Out the Window?
Boredom, daydreaming, and idle time are important for creativity and motivation , as well as your mental health. This video reinforces the idea by pointing out that while none of us will ever be praised for looking out the window, this is exactly what we need to do to stay happy, healthy, and inspired.
The videos of the School of Life in general are great, but the best part of that was the analogy between staring lazily out the window and embracing thoughtfulness with Plato’s claim that ideas in your mind are like an aviary full of birds, but in order for these birds to settle and become available, they need moments of rest. This leads us to the moments where we stop the race to be productive and innovative and embrace the rejuvenating nature of purposeful and deliberate inaction with the sole purpose of quieting our minds and getting in touch with our own thoughts and ideas.
Of course, when it is time to look out the window is entirely up to you. Maybe it’s a little mindfulness meditation at the end of the day, or maybe you prefer to start your day with a cup of coffee in hand while you do it. Maybe you travel to work by train or bus. Either way, it’s good for all of us, and it’s worth taking the time to do your day.
