A Beginner’s Guide to Installing Magic Lantern on Your DSLR
Magic Lantern is free software that runs on Canon DSLRs to give them advanced features and more control when shooting video. It looks like a custom firmware, but runs straight from the memory card without changing the camera software. This video from Jake Coppinger shows you how to get started with this powerful tool.
Getting started is pretty simple: first, make sure your camera’s firmware is up to date, set your camera to manual mode, clear all camera settings, and format your memory card. Then you can go to the Magic Lantern website and download the software that matches your firmware version exactly. Once you have copied it to an SD card, you can insert it into the camera, turn it on and go to the “update firmware” item. This will force him to download new software. Then you are ready to go with Magic Lantern. We dived into the software a few years ago, but it has come a long way since then with new tools to help you focus, control audio, capture time-lapse sequences, and more.
Since the software isn’t owned by Canon itself, the developers can’t promise that it won’t damage your camera, and Coppinger recommends a few precautions. Do not open the memory card or battery cover while the camera is on, and if you want to remove Magic Lantern, please do a full formatting of the card in the camera, rather than just delete files.
