American Airlines Made It Harder to Earn Points With Partner Airlines
The airlines have made some changes this year, and as we have explained , they are usually not in your favor. American Airlines recently cut the number of points AAdvantage members can earn when flying with partner airlines.
American Airlines recently announced plans to migrate its mileage-based reward program to an income- based program , which means you’ll now earn points based on the value of your flight. If you are an AAdvantage member, you were probably not happy with this announcement, but there is more room for disappointment: rates with partner carriers have been reduced.
American is part of the Oneworld alliance , which means it partners with other carriers (like British Airways) to enable customers to earn points when they fly with those carriers. Until recently, you could earn 100% of American awards on most partner airlines. As The Points Guy found out, American has revamped its Rewards page with new, lower fares on most Economy Class flights. Here are just a few of the changes they discovered:

These are just a few examples. The Points Guy estimates that 180 partner fare classes have dropped. If you’re traveling in first class, the good news is that many business and first class flights have gone up. It will take the rest of us a little longer to earn rewards with partner airlines.
