The Easiest Way to Make a Flaky Crust for a Simple Four-Ingredient Pie
Making a pie – or at least making a pie crust – can be quite intimidating if you’ve never baked before, enough so that you can just run out and buy a pre-made crust. You don’t have to: you can get a super flaky pie crust with four ingredients and no special hardware, and Bon Appetit shows us how.
The video above tells the story, but the process only takes ten minutes and the list of ingredients is pretty simple: one cup plus two tablespoons of all-purpose flour, one teaspoon of granulated sugar, half a teaspoon of salt, and one cold stick. butter. Combine dry ingredients, then chop the butter and stir in the flour mixture. Spread it all out on a baking sheet or countertop, grab a rolling pin (or something you can use to roll out the dough) and get to work. It will take a few minutes, but it will work out well, and the video even uses huge chunks of butter in the process.
You will also need three tablespoons of ice cold water after you have some sort of combination of floured butter and flour mixture. Take the mixture, transfer it to a bowl, and sprinkle with ice water. Stir a little more with your hands, then roll until gathered. They suggest using a bench for this (which we really like ) to make the work easier. When you’re done and everything is sticking, you will have an amazingly flaky crust as it hardens.
