Difference Between Parkour and Freerunning
You’ve probably seen chase scenes in movies likeCasino Royale , where fugitives jump over obstacles and land from frightening heights with feline grace. It’s parkour and freerunning in action – and they are similar. However, the difference between them lies in the way of thinking.
Developed from military training with an obstacle course, parkour is about running, swinging, jumping and climbing from point A to point B in the fastest way possible. Freerunning is similar to it, but it brings out the flamboyant side of parkour with quirky flips and stylistic acrobatics. The KKParkour blog explains that it is more like the art of movement, expressed in creativity in the environment.
In fact, parkour is more “practical” (like those obstacle course races). It’s also a viable way to incorporate fitness into your life as you can develop coordination, balance, and overall body strength while having fun and practicing healthy movements at the same time. If you don’t like navigating urban facilities, many major cities have parkour gyms (such as Boulder, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah ) that offer a safer learning environment.
Just don’t expect to be good right away. In fact, this scene from “The Office,” where the show’s characters perform embarrassingly dangerous stunts while shouting “parkour!”, Is a (hilarious) masterclass of what not to do when you’re learning parkour.
