Unlike some of the more complex fruits, berries are relatively easy to identify for ripeness. Their color is a good indicator, but as Kitsch points out, there are some subtle signs that the berries are about to go bad.
Oddly enough, the container can be a sign of a tainted berry. They explain:
The container they are in is wet or stained.
This is probably a sign of overripe soft berries at the bottom of the basket. Since you cannot rummage through the basket to find out, checking the bottom and sides of the container is a good indicator. There is usually a moldy berry in a container with these marks. Your best bet is to get a new box.
