Be Prepared to Pay Extra If Your Uber Driver Waits
Don’t keep the Uber driver waiting; it’s just impolite. However, aside from general politeness, being late will also cost you. The company just cut its five-minute grace period to two minutes.
In a recent press release, Uber announced:
When a driver arrives on time, we think it’s fair that he gets paid for his time. So, we are testing something new: we pay drivers for waiting times longer than 2 minutes.
While we encourage riders to only request a ride when they are ready, we understand that they sometimes lag behind a bit. In these cases, drivers will be compensated for the extra minutes they need.
What’s more, if you cancel your trip after the two-minute grace period, you may incur a fee for that as well. Uber says these fees vary by city and range from $ 5 to $ 10 . For UberPOOL, being late or canceled will cost you $ 2. TechCrunch says Lyft has a similar policy, but they’ll wait five minutes and try to contact you before paying you a $ 5-10 fee.
Uber also says it is experimenting with waiting times and canceled flights in Dallas, New Jersey, New York and Phoenix, and plans to make changes to other cities later. Check out the full press release for more information.
