Ask for a Letter of Recommendation As Soon As Possible After Leaving Your Job

When leaving one job for another – and leaving in a good relationship – you may not be thinking about the need for a letter of recommendation. After all, you’ve already got another job. However, this is the best time to ask your manager for a letter of recommendation.

LiveCareer explains:

It is recommended that you get a letter of recommendation from your manager as soon as possible after leaving the position. Immediately after receiving the letter of recommendation, it will be easier for your manager to remember the specific contributions you have made to the team. Even if you ultimately don’t need a referral right away, a letter of recommendation will give you the opportunity to seek help in case you can’t reach your former boss at a later time. Also, if you decide to return to the manager after a year or later to ask him for help over the phone, you can remind him of the recommendation letter they wrote for you.

In some of our previous job search posts, commenters have mentioned issues with tracking down former managers to vouch for them – a real problem when you apply for a new job. This is why it’s best to keep in touch with former bosses and colleagues . In any case, a written recommendation letter can now greatly help you in the future.
