Plan for the Rest of Your Life, Not Just Retirement
When you think about planning for retirement, you’re probably thinking about 401 (k) s, interest calculators, and other monetary gadgets. This is all well and good, but remember to think about how you are going to spend your time.
As the business site Harvard Business Review points out, most people don’t really pursue the idea of retirement because they want to sit in a chair and stare at a wall for the rest of their lives. We may like the idea that we no longer have to work, but we often think very little about what we really want to spend our time on. This puts tremendous pressure on your final years of life, forcing them to withstand all the efforts that you put into retirement. So, while you are planning your retirement financially, it makes sense to also think about what you think the purpose of retirement is:
In other words: we don’t really want to retire and do nothing. We just want to do what we love. And I’m not talking about endless days of fishing, fishing and sailing at sunset. While it may take a little time for us to tackle these matters, you will be surprised to know how quickly the bloom can fade after such a rosy retirement.
When you start thinking about what you will do with your time when you retire, you may find that you don’t have to wait. If you want to spend years traveling the world, you don’t have to wait until that time to do so. Or perhaps you can spend your younger years learning languages that will help you travel. Building the life you want to lead when you finish the job (if you even want it to end!) Doesn’t have to be solely about putting money in an account and waiting.
