Hiking is an inexpensive way to travel to multiple locations in one trip and save money on your trip. This 56 European Cities Price Index will help you figure out which stops suit your interests and your budget.
Price is only one factor to consider when planning your hike, but it gives you a good idea of which cities will be more expensive for those who hike or drive through town. Here are the criteria by which the cost of the trip was used to rate each city:
- One night in the cheapest bed in the cheapest hostel with a good location and good reviews.
- Two public transport trips per day
- One paid / famous attraction per day (each city is loaded with free activities for budget travelers, but here we are taking the average cost of the main attraction in each city for each day).
- Three “budget” meals a day (we took our minimum meal price and added 20% to make it more realistic for a longer trip).
- Three cheap local beers (or wine) every day as an “entertainment fund”. Non-drinkers might instead eat dessert and coffee or attend a local music show, so this is a general guideline that should be proportional to each city.
It’s no surprise that the top 10 destinations are dominated by Eastern European cities, but even if you don’t want to travel to that part of Europe, you can still use this index to compare options in the regions you really want to visit.
