Start the 100 Day Challenge to Build Habits Without Overwhelming You
One of the hardest parts of forming new habits is giving up old habits. To make things easier for yourself, turn your habit into a 100-day challenge.
As personal finance site Rich Habits explains, the 100-day trial makes building habits a daunting task. Knowing what the end point is can motivate you to get started. For example, eating better for 100 days doesn’t mean junk food will disappear forever. It’s just a challenge for a few months. By the end, however, you may find that this habit takes root anyway:
Consistency turns behavior into habits. Adopting good daily habits is only possible if you consistently stick to these habits every day. One of the strategies for perpetuating good habits that my first lab rat, Rich Habits, came up with, my son, is the so-called 100-day trial. Here’s how it works: For 100 days, focus on one activity for 100 days in a row. By the end of 100 days, this daily activity will become a daily habit. Participating in an activity for 100 days helps build the neural network infrastructure needed to build a habit.
Of course, you can adjust the duration of the assignment according to your needs. Even if you end up not sticking to a new habit, the discipline required to stick to a certain behavior for 100 days may be good for developing other habits in the future.
