Learn How to Create Structures Using the Square Fastener
If you’ve ever wanted to build a structure or shelter using only a few branches and rope, this video will show you how.
In this ITS Tactical YouTube tutorial, you will learn the basics of structural support using the Heavy Duty Square Fastener. Start by tying the toothed hitch to the top spar (branch or wooden pole). Then lay the upper side member on top of the lower one so that they are perpendicular. By wrapping rope around both poles in three passes or so (you can see this in the video), you twist around the rope that is between them and connect the two spars. This will tighten the cable and prevent the two side members from slipping. After you have done a few turns, you will complete the knot with a different toothed hitch on the same side member you started on (although the stop knot can be just as effective here). This demo uses paracord, but that’s just for show. Make sure to use real fiber rope or sisal rope if you want to build something in the field.
