Why Cocktails Come in Different Glass Sizes and Shapes
You have no reason to have a dozen different types of glasses in your home bar, so why do bartenders serve cocktails in so many different types of glasses? Well, this video from IdeaChannel PBS explains where all these glasses come from and whether they matter.
You can watch all of the videos above, but in an interview with Ivy Meeks, owner of Leyenda , a New York bar and operator of Speedrack , a national cocktail competition, explains to Mike Ragnetta that many bartenders don’t give a lot. thought about which glass the cocktail was served in. She argues that many cocktails can and should be served in any glass (good news for us home bartenders), but there are several reasons why certain drinks might be healthy from certain glassware. Some cocktails, such as those with strong aromas, should be served with glasses that point towards the nose, rather than wide-mouth or open-topped glasses.
Aside from some of these cases, Meeks explains the many reasons why certain drinks go into certain glasses, often boiled down to pop culture, as well as the fact that films and the media advise us to drink from those glasses. When you see a sazerak in a shot glass, when a sazerak should not be served over ice, this is an image from Mad Men talking, not the best way to serve a drink.
In the end, the answer is yes, some glasses can make some cocktails better, but you have to make a cocktail with a glass in mind. Otherwise, the choice of cookware depends on the feel, the atmosphere and the attitude. Click Play on the video above (it’s about 15 minutes long, but well worth it) to learn more about all of this and learn how to make some delicious-looking cocktails.
