PSA: Quitting Apps on Your IPhone Will Not Extend Battery Life
For some reason, people love to close apps on their iPhones in the hopes of extending battery life. We previously pointed out that this doesn’t work , but 9to5Mac has an alleged email from Craig Federighi himself confirming this.
A 9to5Mac reader sent an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking, “Do you often quit your iOS multitasking apps and do you need it for battery life?” Cook did not answer, but Federighi answered, bluntly saying: “No and no :)”
The reason is quite simple: most applications running in the background either do not work at all, or freeze in RAM. This means that when they are running in the background, they do not drain the battery. A forced exit from the application should only be necessary when a crash occurs. Of course, this does not mean that certain functions of the application cannot kill your battery. What kills your battery are apps that abuse background app updates, notifications, or have location services enabled all the time, so we offer a monthly audit to clarify things like this .
