If there is one thing humans are good at (besides regulating body temperature and manipulating objects with fire fingers), it is rationalization. The next time you find yourself apologizing to yourself, say them out loud.
As the advice site Impossible explains, your irrational excuses are likely to sound less sensible when you say them out loud. Inwardly, you may feel that there is a good reason to justify breaking the diet or quitting the habit. By saying this out loud, you are more likely to face reality:
Here’s a simple trick: apologize out loud. Make a list of all the reasons you are NOT doing something and then say them out loud with your mouth.
If the reason you can’t do something is because “a cheetah is approaching me at 70 mph for brunch,” then your excuses will likely sound pretty silly pretty quickly when their verbalize.
This self-argument is a convenient way to distinguish between the excuses you have and the excuses that are being replaced by your emotions. No one will accuse you of not going home to work because of the flu. However, someone might think it’s silly to make the most of your credit card because you’ve had a tough day.
