Get More Answers to Your Emails With These Six Simple Rules
Whether you’re emailing to complain to customer support, or just want a response from a coworker in the office, these six email rules will increase your chances of getting a response.
Usually the purpose of emailing someone is to get an answer, but more often than not emails are skipped or forgotten because they are too long, too angry, too confusing, or don’t provide enough information. Boomerang’s Email Performance Service analyzed data from over 5.3 million emails to see which messages generated the most recipient responses and came up with some useful insights. Boomerang Blog’s Alex Moore summarizes his top six tips based on his data:
- Use short sentences with simpler words. 3rd grade reading is best.
- Include 1-3 questions in your email.
- Don’t forget to include a subject! Aim for 3-4 words.
- Use a slightly positive or slightly negative tone. Both sound better than a completely neutral tone.
- To take a position! It responds to messages with an opinion more than to objective ones.
- Write enough, but not too much. Try to keep your messages between 50 and 125 words long.
Practice writing emails this way and you’ll always get a response before you notice. You can read more about their methodology and findings from the link below.
