Convert Your Broken Umbrella Into a Waterproof DIY Tote Bag
If you have an umbrella that’s broken by rainy weather, a little work will turn it – or at least the fabric part – into a waterproof tote bag that you can use instead of throwing it all in the trash can.
You don’t need great sewing skills for this project, but a sewing machine will make it much easier. In addition to the umbrella fabric, you will need thread, an iron, scissors, and a smooth cutting surface. That’s all. Remove the umbrella fabric from the metal frame and hold the Velcro strap to close the umbrella.
From there, you’ll either want to follow the linked instructions carefully, or you’ll need another reusable shopping bag that you can use as a template. You will want to fold the fabric back to shape the shape of your bag, trim off the excess, and then sew the whole thing closed.
Add a Velcro strap and wrap it around the folded back for easy storage. You now have a waterproof bag that rolls up tightly, closes with its own strap, and can fit into your real carry-on until you need it. A step-by-step visual guide to this project can be found at the link below.
