The Easiest Way to Avoid Static Electricity When Leaving Your Car

If you have ever wondered why your car sometimes gives you a painful shock when you get out of it, this video explains what is behind it and how to prevent it.

In this video from the Physics Girl YouTube channel, presenter Dianne Kauern explains why getting out of your car can cause an unpleasant static shock if you touch it outside. When you get out of the car, you slide your body over the seat, and this can leave both the seat and your body with a static charge. If the air is cold and dry enough, the charge will quickly and abruptly transfer from your body to the metal of the car and shake you. Kauern suggests that the easiest way to avoid this is to touch the metal when exiting the car. Even if the charge builds up, it will slowly flow from your body to the metal without causing a strong “shock”.
