Start the New Year Right With a Year-End Review

To move forward, we often have to look back to where we were. The end of the year is the perfect time to review your accomplishments and progress.

Fast Company offers six steps to self check. (For a more in-depth professional overview, see our guide on the subject .) I especially like the suggestion to do a brain dump:

“Take time to describe every major event from the past year,” advises [management consultant Laurie] Sherwin. Divide them into categories such as projects, presentations, leadership, teamwork, compensation, and personal growth.

To make sure you’re capturing everything, look at calendars, meeting notes and reports to find anything you might have missed, advises HR consultant Lisa Falen .

Be sure to include life accomplishments, Sherwin adds: “Success in business and success in life are interchangeable,” she says. “Happiness in one area has a trickle effect.”

Think of it as your personal video of the highlights of the year.
