Why You Should Give Your New Year Resolution a Theme

New Year is the best time to set goals and decisions . You will find plenty of tips on how to achieve these goals, but one fun option is to give your resolution a theme.

Author Gretchen Rubin offers this advice, and it essentially includes a generalized, overarching topic for your entire year. I’ve tried this myself and it keeps you focused as you filter your habits and plans through this single thread. She explains:

Over the past few years, I have identified one idea, summed up in one word, as an overarching theme for the entire year.

My sister Elizabeth often makes this decision too. Last year her theme was “Roman”. One year was “Free Time”, another was “Style”, the third was “Hot Wheels” – that year she bought a car and started driving; she and I struggled with the fear of driving, which was much more difficult for her considering that she lives in Los Angeles and I live in New York.

Last year, my main theme was to do more to break out of my comfort zone . So while I made my goals specific for the year, giving the year the topic was encouraged to have a voice in my head to remind me to do more uncomfortable things and “say yes” more often .

This is an interesting idea and Rubin discusses it in detail in his full post below.
