You Only Need to Succeed Today
The long term goals are huge. You want to get a good job, lose weight, raise your kids right, and get rich. Good luck with that by tomorrow. Instead, just focus on today.
As the personal finance blog The Simple Dollar points out, it’s easy to focus too much on the end result you want to achieve and lose sight of what drives you to it. Namely today. This is the only day you can truly control and the only day you need to worry about. Add enough of today, and you will eventually reach the goal you are striving for.
If this sounds like the trash you used to hear from cat posters, then you probably need to tweak your plans a bit, because there is a very practical difference in approaching your goals this way:
First of all, you need to go back to today – nothing more, nothing less. Success is about today, period.
Yes, dreaming about a lot of money or a subtle body is fun, but it just won’t happen tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, or even next month. These are long-term things.
The only way to do this is to spend one day at a time. What can you do today to move in a positive financial direction? Or positively in terms of your health?
Here’s a handy way to know if you’re using this mindset effectively: Do your long-term goals include the actions you can take today? If they don’t, then you probably won’t. If so, then this is the only thing you really need to focus your efforts on. It’s nice to have a long-term plan, and it is definitely helpful to have an idea of where you are going. But the plan is not the goal. Thinking about a plan won’t get you there. Today is the only day you have to do something. So use that.
The plan is simple. Putting this into practice is hard work. | Simple Dollar via Rockstar Finance
