Turn Off Facebook Nostalgic Messages “This Day” With This Filter

Facebook’s nostalgia feature for this day can be nice if you like revisiting old posts, but if you want to turn it off, there is no frustration. But here’s how to make it show nothing.

The Facebook feature, which is not a rip-off of Timehop, will show you the posts you made that day from one to eleven years ago (when Facebook was formed). For some unknown reason, Facebook did not make this feature optional. You can choose “fewer” nostalgic posts – although in my experience this resulted in one every two or three days, not every day – but you can’t turn this off completely.

Fortunately, there is a workaround. While you can’t turn it off, you can filter out certain dates so that they never show up (presumably so Facebook doesn’t remind you of the time you posted about being in a car accident or something terrible). By using this feature to create a filter that covers your entire life span, past and future, you can effectively disable this feature if you don’t explicitly disable it. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the desktop version of Facebook.
  2. In the “Applications” section on the left, click “This day”.
  3. Click “Settings” in the upper right corner.
  4. Next to the Dates field in the Filters section, click Edit.
  5. Click Select Dates.
  6. Choose a start date anytime before you first joined Facebook. (If you’re not sure, anything before 2004 will work.)
  7. Choose an end date in the distant future. Ideally, this is so far in the future that you will never reach that date.
  8. Click Finish, and then click Save.

You did it! Now all your memories are erased! I mean, not like Eternal Sunshine of the Total Recall or anything like that. But Facebook will no longer show you memories of past posts. If you prefer to continue to receive messages from memory, but do not want certain (for example, any post during that one stage of your life that you would rather forget, you know it), you can narrow the filter to a certain time. Frame.
