Ask How the Company Upholds Your Highest Values at the End of the Interview
“You have questions?” this is the interview question that is always asked . If you want to make sure this job is perfect for you, ask this question about your core values.
As USA Today explains, the process goes like this: Determine what is most important to you in the workplace. It can be autonomy, personal development, service to others, or any other core value. Pick one or two of the top ones that are not negotiable. Then, when the interviewer asks what questions you have, share your core value, explain why it is valuable to you and the company, and then ask how the company deals with that value.
Here’s one example:
In my interview last week, I explained my value for effectiveness. I told the interviewer that I worked for companies that were very effective, and I have also been for companies that were extremely ineffective, with a lot of outdated rules and bureaucratic red tape. In my experience, companies that value efficiency, make more money, have more engaged and talented employees, promote innovation and creativity, and generally do much more. Then I asked what the value of their company was in terms of efficiency.
A few days later, an interviewer called me and said that this is the best question he has ever heard in an interview – after he offered me a job!
This question alone can help you find a job that really works for you and can help you conduct a more meaningful interview.
