You Can Stretch Your Belly to Eat More (but Not for Thanksgiving)

When pumpkin pie are served, are you already stuffed with the filling? It turns out that big stomachs, this legendary superpower of competitive eaters, can be enjoyed by all of us. Wish we had to start training a few weeks ago.

The stomachs of dieters do contract, according to the STAT, and those who overeat have larger stomachs than the rest of us. Competitive eaters, the winners of the hot dog eating competition, are kind of “exercising” by swallowing large amounts of water .

Competitive eaters “can train their stomachs to expand and expand to an extraordinary degree,” said Dr. Mark Levin, director of gastrointestinal radiology at the University of Pennsylvania and investigating gastric distension. “Literally the whole belly … [becomes] this giant flabby sack that can hold phenomenal amounts of food.”

Dr. Levin asked the controversial eater and regular Joe to eat barium-soaked hot dogs (to better show on X-rays). The competing eater’s stomach expanded to accommodate 36 hot dogs until he looked “like he was carrying a full-term pregnancy.”

Even if you don’t have time to train, you have other options if you are trying to stuff the filling (not that we recommend it). Read more at the link below to learn what competitive eaters can teach us to overcome signals that tell us to stop eating, and consider using the tips in reverse to feel full with less food.
