Google Photos Can Now Free up Space on Your Phone
Photos and videos usually take up most of the space on our devices. If you find that your phone is running out of space, there is a new feature in Google Photos that will allow you to bulk delete photos and videos that have already been saved online.
Google says this new “Free up space” option in the Google Photos app settings will delete your backed up photos and videos from your device, but technically they’re not “backups” if you delete them from your phone and then only live in one place. (on google servers). However, running out of space on your phone and not being able to take another photo sucks. So it’s a good option if you have another copy of your photos and videos elsewhere.
Google Photos will also notify you when your phone is running out of space and give you the option to delete backed up photos from your phone that are older than 30 days.
The update is rolling out to Android and coming to iOS soon.
In addition to these new features, Google Photos on the Web now allows you to downgrade your previously uploaded photos from “original” (full resolution) to “high” to save space. High quality photos do not count towards your Google storage allocation.
