Transform IKEA Wardrobes Into Murphy Beds
Murphy’s bed can help you save space: lower it when you need it, and raise it when you want to use the room for another purpose. But Murphy’s beds are expensive. Make one of the IKEA cabinets yourself.
For this project you will need 2 PAX wardrobes with doors, 2 LURÖY slatted bed bases, wood, hinges and a double mattress. You can only use one wardrobe if you want to use a single mattress.
Guest IH, a member of IKEA Hackers, offers complete instructions for this do-it-yourself wardrobe bed. You’ll be making the bed frame to match the wardrobes, but otherwise it looks like a very doable project if you’re comfortable. The project uses sturdy door hinges as a folding mechanism for the bed. Raising and lowering the bed may not be as easy as with the Murphy bed set, but you will save tons of money and get a workout.
