Spice up Presentations With Villain, Victim and Hero

Presentations can be terribly boring if not done well , but Harvard Business Review points out one simple approach that will spice up any presentation: use a villain-victim-hero structure.

The idea may sound absurd, but the basic idea is that we love stories, and when you play with that, adding these three elements automatically makes your presentation more interesting. They give several different examples:

In software, the villain can be slow or unreliable programs, the victims are frustrated users, and the hero is new or updated technology that works correctly and efficiently. In healthcare, the villain can be illness or bad results, the victims and their families are the victims, and the hero is effective and compassionate care. In production, the villain can be expensive or defective products, the victims are the consumers who pay for them, and the hero is the safe product that works as promised.

When you have these three elements, the story comes naturally and the presentation becomes more interesting. Granted, this doesn’t really apply to every presentation under the sun, but it’s still a useful brainstorming session for many.
