Five Essential Government and Industry Software Skills in Demand
Many employers find it difficult to find candidates with the software skills a company needs. MidAmerica Nazarene University analyzed resumes and job postings to find out where the skills are most lacking.
The map below shows the major software skills gap for each state. On the MNU website, you can click to see how employers with four other skills are posting job postings that are missing on job seekers’ resumes. You can also see the major skill gaps by industry on their map.
Note to software developers: Put git on your resume. (You probably already know how to use GitHub , but git has been listed as the most common skill gap in nearly half of the states and regularly ranked in the top 5. Automated resume reviewers may not count you as a complete match if your resume lacks skills. are listed in the vacancy announcement.)
Here’s how the MNU collected the data:
Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics , we identified the most common occupations in the country. We then used Capterra’s listings to find the 10-15 most used computer programs in each industry. We searched millions of resumes and job postings on Indeed for these software keywords and we found where the largest gaps exist between published job listings and published resumes.
A few more details about our research process: firstly, our investigation was carried out during the week in late August – early September. This is a limited sample and supply and demand will inevitably change over time. We also limited our research to one job site, and since we could only search for programs by name, we could not search for programs with generic names (such as Action). By design, we have filtered out non-statistically significant resumes and job postings to ensure that supply and demand are not misleading.
And, without further ado, a map. But follow the link below for the interactive version.
