The Best Way to Write Text That Won’t Kill Your Neck

We’ve already covered the downsides to the fact that constant gaze on your phone affects your poor neck (hint: it’s not pretty). But instead of telling you to stop using your phone, here’s a handy way to hold your phone in your hand to write text messages and check how many likes you got on Instagram.

Keith Galliett , strength, conditioning and movement coach, shares a few quick adjustments here:

1. Change the position of the hand so that the skull can remain on the head.

2. Learn to use the muscles in your eyes to look at things.

3. Bend your arm at the elbow and bring your elbow to the front of your chest, and place the phone closer to your face.

As Keith demonstrates in the photos above, you are essentially keeping your shoulders square, your chest up, and your entire spine fairly neutral – as opposed to the equivalent of 60 pounds of strength at your neck . To look down, Kate suggests using your eyes rather than pulling your neck forward.

Since most people spend an average of five hours a day on the phone – probably looking down on it – this simple tweak can do wonders for neck and shoulder strain in the long run. I myself have a stiffness in my neck and shoulders, so I held the phone as best I could. And since then I even began to notice when my neck starts to tilt forward like a small kettle and get better.
