Most Hotel Safes Have a Hidden Lock That Can Be Easily Broken
The safe in the hotel room is for keeping valuables such as passport or cash while traveling. But as it turns out, most hotel safes are relatively easy to break into, so it’s worth thinking twice about where to hide your most valuable items.
This post is part of our Evil Week series on Lifehacker where we take a look at the dark side of goal achievement. Sometimes evil is justified, and sometimes knowing evil means knowing how to defeat it. I want more? Visit our wicked week tags page .
We talked about how easy it is to break into almost any electronic safe , and cybersecurity expert Jim Stickley demonstrates another method that shows how easy it is with a paper clip and a jackknife. First, he removes the nameplate on the safe to open the hidden lock. Then, using a pocket knife and a bent paperclip, he easily opens the safe.
Stickley told the Huffington Post:
People often think that the room itself is safe. They know that the cleaning team may have access, but they think it is a low risk, especially if they use the safe in the hotel room. The reality is that it is not difficult to gain access to a person’s hotel room.
If you’re thinking about keeping your valuables at your hotel, keep in mind that they have limited liability and with the right set of simple tools, anyone can pick a lock easily. Check out the full post at the link below.
