Tell is a trick that most of us have when we try to lie to someone. It can be as slight twitching of the eyes as it is obvious, like clicking the joints of the fingers. And once someone knows what you are talking about, they can catch you anytime you try to lie to their face. However, one of our commenters, zanmania, found a clever way around this :
Honesty reigned in my house, and there was a lot of pressure to be 100% transparent, but I found out that if I was caught lying right away, my parents would not get angry, they would just laugh at me for thinking that I could get away with it. … So I used to lie small lies just to get caught. Silly insignificant things, like I already took out the trash. Then I looked for a second and gave out a smile, and they called me and laughed at me. Over time, they learned to “catch me in a lie” because I was very bad at it. So now, if I want to avoid punishment for lying to them, all I have to do to get away with it is not a smile.
The more insubstantial lies you can tell someone with your fake story, the more you can push them into real lies. But be careful. You shouldn’t do this too often, because they will start thinking that you are always lying, which is counterproductive. Also, before you start a real lie, make sure it’s worth it and that you are prepared to face the consequences if you get caught.
