Avoid Complacency by Treating Success the Way You Treat Failure
Failure may be the best way to get better, but success gives you the same chance to learn. By treating your successes the same as your failures, you will never miss a lesson and will always be ready to try something new.
Celebrating your success is important to stay motivated, but it’s also important not to feel overly comfortable. Jamie Holmes, author of Nonsense: The Power of Ignorance , suggests looking at success as well as failure. Otherwise, you may be missing out on new risks that could lead to even greater success:
When people say success hurts, it’s because they are getting out of the learning regime. In a sense, certainty is the opposite of uncertainty. When I’m wrong, it kind of makes me happy, because I’ve learned a thing or two.
When you fail, you might ask yourself, “What could I have done differently to be successful?” So when you are successful, ask yourself, “What could I have done differently to fail?” You may be surprised at what you learn. Don’t let your single success lead to complacency.
