Credit Cards and Airlines Offering Free Flights for “companions”
Most of us know the basics of how credit card rewards work: you spend money, you earn miles, and later you redeem those miles for free flights. But there are other benefits that some karts offer: flying with a companion.
Basically, it’s a free or discounted flight for a fellow traveler on their next trip. Several airlines offer them, and USA Today’s travel site, Road Warrior Voices, lists some of the best. Here are a few highlights:
- Southwest : This is the gold standard for airline passengers, allowing one lucky person of your choice to fly with you every time you fly, for nearly two calendar years. To earn it, you need 100 one-way qualifying flights or 110,000 qualifying points over one year. You will probably need a Chase Southwest credit card , which can have bonuses of up to 60,000 points just for signing up to help you there.
- Delta : If you have a Delta credit card (SkyMiles or Reserve) from American Express, the airline will send you one Companion Certificate first at check-in and then renew the card each year. The certificate is suitable for accompanying you on an internal round trip.
- American Express Platinum : If you fly a lot in Business or First Class, this is the best option. The Amex Platinum card has partnerships with over 20 airlines worldwide, including Delta. Cardholders who book a business class or first class ticket on one of the AmEx member airlines can always take their companion with them free of charge, without limiting the number of flights.
Keep in mind that these cards usually have a higher annual fee, but they are well worth it when compared to the price of the flight. Of course, you will want to study the fine print on your own, depending on the map. If you are a frequent traveler this is worth looking into and you can check the link below for more details.
