The Easy Way to Save Money on Groceries: Stick to Flexible Products
You don’t have to look down at your grocery receipts with bitterness. According to the author of the popular cookbook, Eat Well for $ 4 a Day, you can save tons of money by buying mostly multi-meal foods.
We’ve already talked about Lynn Brown’s Good and Cheap: Eat Well for $ 4 a Day , but she’s always ready to share additional tips for cutting your food budget. Her number one tip? Buy flexible foods that can be used in multiple meals. Brown explained to Business Insider with a great example :
I say buy eggs because they are one of the most flexible ingredients ever. You can come home from work and put them on the table in a few minutes. They go with everything: if you only have soy sauce and really dried green onions, if you have half a wilted tomato, you can throw that in there. You can bake with them, make pretty quiches, or cook them with sauces to make them more like dinner.
Dried beans, dried pasta, fruits, vegetables, and yogurt are good too, says Brown. You probably already do this with a few ingredients, but take this as an opportunity to expand on this approach. Think of other foods you can eat in multiple meals each day. What do you recommend for flexible foods?
