You might think that using bulky, fancy words will make you sound smart, but in reality it can have the exact opposite effect.
When you’re trying to sound smart, it ‘s helpful to emphasize what you know , but how you talk about it matters. Research by Daniel M. Oppenheimer of Princeton University and published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology suggests that using long, academically sounding words instead of simple, more intelligible words makes people think you’re less intelligent. The participants in the study found that the more they truly understood what was being conveyed, the more reasonable they felt the message was.
Basically, the more complex a language you try to use, the more likely it is to backfire on you. You may appear to be fake or someone who is not smart enough to understand your audience. Keep things simple and focus on getting your message across to you rather than trying to appear impressive.
