This Video Debunks 10 Misconceptions About Hiccup Cures

Everyone seems to have a specific cure for hiccups, but there is very little scientific evidence to support most of them. This video shows which remedies don’t work and explains why.

Hiccups are one of your body’s weirdest spontaneous reactions, and very little is known about why they occur. However, we don’t like them and want them to go away. In this video from YouTube channel Mental Floss, host Elliot Morgan debunks some of the most popular home remedies. For example, do not hold your breath while holding your breath or breathing into a paper bag; save the scare for Halloween; drinking water will only moisturize you; and specially prepared hiccup lozenges are probably not the miracle cure you are looking for. However, if you have alcohol hiccups, biting off a lemon wedge soaked in Angostura tincture may help. Also, a spoonful of peanut butter or sugar can help with hiccups, but there is currently no official cure for this .
