Make Life-Changing Decisions by Thinking of Your Goals As a Game
Games like Settlers of Catan are “resource management games” in which you make tough choices and focus on long-term goals (such as building your largest army). It’s a lot like life: you have goals, opportunities, and solutions to help you achieve what you want. You can apply the same game logic to make the right choice.
When you have so many chances of amassing resources, you need to choose one goal towards which all opportunities should be directed. Writer Patrick Rothfuss shares his own experience of focusing on opportunities (resources) to help him successfully script the translation of his books into film the way he wanted. You can do the same by choosing your own win-win scenario and thinking about how each opportunity will help you achieve that goal. After all, the time and energy you spend looking for every opportunity is wasting your resources. If an opportunity doesn’t work for you, discard it so you are prepared for opportunities that will help you.
For example, if you are playing Settlers of Catan, you need to decide how to spend your resource cards. If you want to achieve achievements (the longest road and the largest army), you must choose one as your goal, as it will be difficult for you to earn enough resources to achieve both. Saying no is not always easy , but every opportunity you give up leaves room for something to help you achieve your goals.
