Ask for Time to Think Immediately After Receiving a Negative Review.
Nobody likes to receive negative reviews, but what matters is how you decide to respond . When someone gives you negative feedback, directly ask for time to think and avoid unnecessary confrontation.
Many of us tend to be defensive when we receive negative feedback, and this can turn even constructive criticism into an insult in our minds. This is why management consultant Dick Grothe recommends asking for a little time right after receiving if something cannot be done on site:
This will defuse the immediate situation. This tells the other person that you think their feedback is important enough to consider carefully and calmly. And it allows you to think through the accuracy of what you have been told, perhaps check its accuracy with others.
