Apple Offers Prorated Refunds for Unused AppleCare Warranties
While we’re generally against extended warranties , AppleCare is one of those warranties that people seem to agree with anyway. Under these circumstances, AppleCare isn’t the worst, and it turns out that you can actually ask for a refund for unused AppleCare parts if you sell or trade your device.
The refund request page was discovered by Macworld, which also details what you can get back:
“The original cost is calculated in proportion to the time remaining minus the cost of any service used and minus a cancellation fee of $ 25 or 10 percent of the prorated remaining cost, whichever is less.”
So with the $ 99 AppleCare + plan, after exactly 12 months and no service incident, you have $ 49.50 left. Since $ 25 is more than 10 percent of that amount ($ 4.95), Apple deducts that lower cost, which makes about $ 44. While not huge, it’s not a trifle either. For a computer, it could be larger. The $ 349 MacBook Pro plan a year later would result in a remaining cost of $ 233 minus $ 23.30, or about $ 209.
It’s not exactly a ton of money or something, but considering how often people tend to change their iPhones or MacBooks, this is a pretty handy deal to be aware of.
